Reading the Water: How Staying Adaptable Led to a Lake Erie Limit Out

Date: June 20, 2026

Location: Erie, Pennsylvania

Target Species: Lake Erie Walleye

If you’ve been following the weather around Erie this past week, you know the lake has been throwing some serious wind our way. All that blowing does a number on the lake, especially when it comes to turbidity in the shallower "skinny" water.

When we headed out this morning with Ian, Brayden, William, Jeremy, George, and Andy, we had a game plan—but on Lake Erie, you always have to let the conditions dictate your next move.

Here is a look at how paying attention to the details turned a slow start into an absolute banner morning on the water.

Pro Tip: Water Color Matters!

On the ride out, our Raymarine Axiom unit was lighting up. We were marking an incredible amount of biomass even at cruising speed. Seeing that kind of life on the screen, we decided to set down in 37 feet of water (fow) where we had excellent walleye marks.

We deployed the full arsenal:

  • FishUSA StealthCore: Running 5-colors with short deeps on one side and Renoskys on the other.

  • Braid Divers: Set on a 3-setting, back 100 to 125 feet.

  • Traxstech Riggers: Dropped to 33, 40, and 55 feet spinning spoons.

We got the entire spread perfectly dialed in, but… crickets.

We had the marks right beneath us, but zero takers. That’s when we took a hard look at our surroundings. The water color where we set up was a pretty murky, muddy brown—a direct result of the past week's heavy blows. Walleye are sight predators, and while they like a little cover, that heavy turbidity can completely shut down an aggressive bite.

Finding the Transition Line

Instead of pulling lines and running, we decided to stick with a steady troll, heading Northeast into cleaner water.

The payoff was almost instant. As the brown water started giving way to a beautiful, clean green color, the screen didn’t just show fish—it showed active fish. Right around 53 fow, it was absolute game on.

Our most productive pocket of the day ended up being between 57 and 63 fow. Once we hit that clean, green sweet spot, the rods didn't stop firing.

A Loaded Cooler and a Great Crew

Ian, Brayden, William, Jeremy, George, and Andy had their hands full with a crazy morning of non-stop reeling. It was a textbook team effort to manage the chaotic doubles and steady action, and the guys did an awesome job filling up a phenomenal meat bucket.

Days like today are a constant reminder of how incredibly blessed we are to have this world-class fishery right out of our backyard here in Erie, PA. The fish are thick, healthy, and hungry—you just have to be willing to read the water, adapt your depth, and find where they can see the bait.

Thanks to the crew for a great day on the big pond!

Tight lines,
